Senior Spotlight: Alfonso Aquilera
LAMONI - The Graceland University athletic department is honoring a Spring sport senior who did not get the chance to finish their final season. The next sport we will recognize is baseball. The baseball team had just over half of their 2020 campaign remaining when the season was officially cancelled. Our first baseball Senior Spotlight is Alfonso Aquilera.
Alfonso, a two-year member of the Yellowjacket baseball team, primarily played left field this season. He was a junior college transfer from Oxnard JC. In the shortened 2020 season, he started in all 23 games and the third highest batting average on the team batting .364 in 77 at bats. He also had the second highest slugging percentage (.623) hitting eight doubles and four home runs.
The Camarillo, California product's best statistical performance this year was against Missouri Valley College on March 1 where he had four RBI including two in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie the game. The Yellowjackets would go on later in the inning to take the lead and eventually win, 12-11 over the Vikings. He had two hits in the contest as well as a sacrifice bunt which later led to another Yellowjacket run.
Graceland University wants to thank Alfonso for his committment to the baseball program and Graceland Athletics as a whole. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
