Yellowjackets Split Senior Day Doubleheader; Rally to Game Two Win

LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University baseball team closed its 2026 season Saturday on Senior Day, splitting a doubleheader with Mount Mercy (32-11, 19-3; 34-11, 20-4). The Yellowjackets fell 12-8 in game one before responding with an 8-7 walk-off victory in game two, finishing the year 10-36 overall and 3-20 in conference play.

In the opener, Graceland showed improved offensive production after Friday's setbacks, tallying eight runs on eight hits. Carson Chiprez led the lineup, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Gabriel Perez added a double and an RBI, and Ryan Spencer contributed two hits. The Yellowjackets plated five runs in the second inning, capitalizing on free passes and situational execution.

Mount Mercy countered with power production, as Drew Terpins, Derek Einertson and Sam Wiese each homered, combining for multiple extra-base hits and RBI.

Game two provided the highlight of the day, as Graceland used a seven-run second inning to establish early run support. Juan Guzman delivered a 4-for-4 performance with an RBI, while Beno Olmeda recorded two RBI, including a run-scoring double, and Ian Martinez added two RBI on a key base hit.

On the mound, Gabriel Perez earned the complete-game victory, working seven innings with seven strikeouts, managing traffic through pitch sequencing and limiting extra-base damage late.

Graceland secured the win in the bottom of the seventh, as Jayden Gilbert delivered the game-winning RBI single, completing the late-inning execution.

"I'm proud of how this group responded and competed, especially in that second game," said head coach Brad Payne. "We executed in key situations and stayed with our approach at the plate and on the mound."

Saturday marked the final games of the season and Senior Day for the Yellowjackets, who showed marked improvement from Friday's results with balanced offensive production and extended innings on the mound.

With the season complete, Graceland will not have a next scheduled contest.
