Graceland Secures 15-8 Win Over Southwestern Behind Defensive Pressure
WINFIELD, Kan. — The Graceland University women's flag football team earned a 15-8 victory over Southwestern (Kan.), utilizing defensive pressure and efficient red zone execution to secure the result.
Graceland opened scoring with a defensive safety, setting the tone early with pressure in the backfield and disciplined flag pulls. The Yellowjackets forced negative plays throughout the opening quarter, limiting Southwestern's early drives and controlling field position.
Offensively, Graceland generated 211 total yards, including 210 through the air, operating primarily through the passing game with quick routes and intermediate concepts. Quarterbacks Sierra Flores (137 passing yards) and Karissa Garcia (73 yards, one touchdown) split reps under center, combining for 23 completions.
The Yellowjackets found the end zone late in the second quarter as Flores connected on a touchdown pass to Mary Jones, capitalizing on a short field following a defensive stop.
In the fourth quarter, Graceland executed a key scoring drive, finishing with a touchdown connection from Garcia to Grace Jensen, lateraled to Jaida Lammie for the score, followed by a successful extra point to extend the lead.
Defensively, Graceland applied consistent pressure, recording five sacks for 25 yards and multiple tackles for loss. Kylie Overkamp led the unit with 7 total tackles and 3.5 sacks, while Sadie Lee added 7 tackles. The Yellowjackets also generated takeaways, including an interception return by Flores, limiting Southwestern's passing efficiency.
Graceland held Southwestern to 184 total yards and forced key stops in the red zone, including a late-game interception to preserve the lead.
Head coach Aaron Richardson emphasized execution on both sides of the ball.
"We controlled the game with defensive pressure and limited their opportunities in key situations," Richardson said. "Offensively, we executed in the red zone and protected the football, which allowed us to close out the game."
Graceland returns home on Monday, April 6 at 3:00 p.m. CDT to face Bethel (Kan.) at Huntsman Field in Lamoni, Iowa.
