Graceland Battles Elements, Secures Two Wins at Spring Sting Challenge
LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University women's flag football team overcame severe weather conditions to post a 2-0 record Saturday at the Spring Sting Challenge, defeating Texas Wesleyan and North Central Missouri College at Huntsman Field. The Yellowjackets competed through driving rain and field saturation conditions, with more than three inches of rainfall recorded throughout the day, impacting footing, ball security and overall execution.
Graceland opened the day with a 15-0 victory over Texas Wesleyan, a contest that included a 45-minute rain delay in the first half due to heavy precipitation. Despite the interruption, the Yellowjackets maintained offensive efficiency in key situations.
Quarterback Sierra Flores completed 17-of-29 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, directing a pass-heavy attack suited to short and intermediate route concepts. Sydney Gann hauled in a touchdown reception, while Aiyanna Hannah provided the explosive play of the game with a 72-yard touchdown reception, extending the lead before halftime.
Graceland's defense controlled the line of scrimmage and limited Texas Wesleyan to 57 total yards, consistently generating pressure and forcing negative plays. The unit recorded multiple sacks and produced a third-quarter safety, emphasizing disciplined rush lanes and effective flag-pulling in open space.
In the second game, Graceland defeated North Central Missouri College, 29-6, continuing to execute through adverse weather conditions. The Yellowjackets established early control with two first-quarter scoring drives and added separation in the fourth quarter.
Flores again led the offense, completing 23-of-38 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns, distributing the ball efficiently across the formation. Jaida Lammie recorded 11 receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown, serving as a primary target in possession situations, while Sydney Gann added a touchdown reception.
Graceland's defense remained the defining factor, holding North Central Missouri College to 118 total yards and a single scoring drive. Kylie Overkamp anchored the defensive unit with 8.5 total tackles and two sacks, contributing to a four-sack team performance. The Yellowjackets also forced a fourth-quarter safety, sealing the result and maintaining control in late-game situations.
Throughout both contests, weather conditions played a significant role, requiring adjustments in snap timing, route depth and defensive pursuit angles. The Yellowjackets emphasized short passing concepts, controlled possessions and situational awareness to offset the effects of rain-soaked conditions.
Head coach Aaron Richardson credited the team's execution and adaptability in difficult conditions.
"Both sides of the ball executed under tough conditions," Richardson said. "We adjusted our route concepts, secured the football, and stayed disciplined defensively. In flag football, controlling the short game and limiting mistakes is critical, especially in weather like this."
Graceland finished the day with a combined 44-6 scoring margin, demonstrating efficiency in the red zone and consistency in defensive pressure packages.
