Graceland Men’s Soccer Defeats Culver-Stockton 3-1 in HAAC Matchup

LAMONI, Iowa Graceland University men's soccer secured a 3-1 victory over Culver-Stockton College in a Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) contest on Wednesday. The win improves the Yellowjackets' season record to 5-0-3 (1-0-1 HAAC), while Culver-Stockton drops to 0-5-2 (0-2-0 HAAC).

The Yellowjackets struck first in the early stages of the match. Just 7:30 into the first half, forward Lucas Porter found the back of the net with a well-timed shot, giving Graceland a 1-0 lead. The goal, unassisted, resulted from Porter's persistence after a failed clearance by the Wildcats.

Culver-Stockton responded late in the first half with a penalty kick conversion by forward Ruben Reinertsen in the 43rd minute. The equalizing goal came after a penalty in the box by a Graceland defender, allowing Reinertsen to level the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Despite the Wildcats' momentum at the end of the first half, Graceland adjusted its tactics in the second period, applying higher pressure and controlling the tempo of the game. The shift paid immediate dividends when midfielder Tyler Dailey scored the go-ahead goal less than two minutes into the second half, putting the Yellowjackets up 2-1. Dailey's unassisted strike was the result of aggressive pressing that forced a turnover near the edge of the box.

As the match progressed, Graceland continued to dominate possession, managing six shots in the second half alone. The decisive moment came in the 86th minute when midfielder Stosh Nevshemal added a third goal, assisted by Dani Amez. Amez delivered a pinpoint cross from the wing, allowing Nevshemal to seal the victory with a clinical finish.

Head men's coach Bryan Courtney was pleased with his teams effort on Wednesday night. "Coming into the match, we know every conference game is going to be a battle. Culver-Stockton's direct style caused us some trouble in the first half, particularly with their long-ball approach. They have a big, physical striker who can dominate in those situations," Courtney said.

"At halftime, we made the necessary adjustments and put better pressure on them. We pressed higher, which prevented them from comfortably moving the ball to midfield and delivering it into the box. Our players managed the physicality of the game well, and I thought we played our style for most of the match. When we control the game like that, we're usually successful. Any conference win is a good one, and I'm very happy with the outcome. Culver-Stockton is always a formidable opponent and always plays us tough."

Graceland's defense, led by goalkeeper Alejandro Soto, held firm in the second half, limiting Culver-Stockton to just two shots on target. Soto made two key saves, both in quick succession, as Culver-Stockton pressed for an equalizer in the 61st minute. The defensive unit also handled numerous set pieces, as the Wildcats earned four corner kicks in the second half but were unable to convert any into scoring chances.

The match saw a total of six yellow cards, with Graceland's Tyler Dailey and Alejandro Soto both receiving cautions. Culver-Stockton's Layne Helvey and Nathan Loftus were booked just before halftime, while the Wildcats were also issued a team yellow card late in the second half.

Graceland finished with 12 shots, five of which were on goal, compared to Culver-Stockton's six shots and three on target. The Yellowjackets also earned nine corner kicks, showcasing their dominance in set-piece opportunities throughout the game.

With this victory, Graceland continues its undefeated run in the 2024 season. The Yellowjackets will next face Central Methodist University in an away conference matchup on Saturday, where they aim to maintain their momentum.
