Graceland Men’s Soccer Earns Draw in Defensive Battle Against Benedictine

LAMONI, Iowa – Graceland University's men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against conference opponent Benedictine College on Saturday afternoon. Despite dominating the first half and creating numerous scoring opportunities, the Yellowjackets were unable to find the back of the net, finishing with a 0-0 result.

The Yellowjackets controlled the tempo in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Benedictine 12-3. However, the team couldn't convert on its chances, with Benedictine goalkeeper Noah Reuscher making five key saves to keep Graceland off the scoresheet.

"This was a tale of two halves," said Graceland head coach Bryan Courtney. "We completely dominated the first half. Unfortunately, we were not able to capitalize on several chances that we created. We were missing just the last little bit on about four or five different opportunities. If we were able to finish one or two of those, the game would have been different."

In the second half, Benedictine made several adjustments, leveling the playing field. The Ravens generated four shots on goal, but Graceland goalkeeper Miguel Roces was up to the challenge, recording six saves in total, including crucial stops in the 69th and 75th minutes to preserve the clean sheet.

"In the second half, they made some good adjustments and were all over us," added Courtney. "I am sure they are just as disappointed with their inability to take hold of the game with several quality chances that they also missed or were saved."

Both teams exhibited disciplined defense, though the match was marred by several yellow cards issued to both sides. Graceland midfielder Joseph Boyce received a yellow card early in the second half, followed by cautions to Guillermo Tejada and Pol Bistue as the intensity of the match increased.

Graceland's best chances came in the first half, with Lucas Porter and Kendall Guzman Soto leading the attack. Porter registered two shots on goal, and Guzman Soto took three shots, two of which were on target. Despite the offensive pressure, the Yellowjackets were unable to convert, as Benedictine's defense and Reuscher stood firm.

Benedictine posed a greater threat in the second half, with forward Kody Argaez leading the charge. Argaez was responsible for three of the Ravens' six shots on goal, but each effort was thwarted by Roces, who recorded his sixth shutout of the season.

Graceland's defense, anchored by Roces and center back Guillermo Tejada, stood strong, absorbing pressure from Benedictine while preventing any clear-cut scoring opportunities.

In the end, both teams were left to rue their missed chances, with Graceland gaining a point in the conference standings. The draw moves Graceland to 6-2-5 overall and 2-2-3 in conference play, while Benedictine moves to 8-3-3 overall and 3-1-3 in the conference.

"In the end, we leave the game with a point against a quality opponent," Courtney said. "We will look forward to our next opportunity on Wednesday against another nationally ranked opponent in William Penn."

Looking Ahead

Graceland will return to action this Wednesday in Lamoni, where they will face William Penn University. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the Yellowjackets look to gain momentum heading into the final stretch of conference play.
