Graceland Men’s Soccer Defeats Baker 1-0 In a Senior Day Thriller

Lamoni, Iowa – The Graceland men's soccer team earned a crucial 1-0 victory against Baker University on Senior Day in a Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) matchup Saturday night. With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 8-4-4 overall and 4-4-2 in conference play, keeping their postseason hopes alive.

The match's only goal came in the 79th minute, when senior Guillermo Tejada headed in a well-placed set piece from Mario Salinas, breaking a scoreless deadlock and lifting Graceland to the win.

Graceland began the game with high energy, fueled by the emotion of Senior Day and the pressure of needing a victory to remain in playoff contention. Head Coach Bryan Courtney commented on the team's mindset heading into the game: "It was an emotional day, as usual on Senior Day. In addition to the emotion of the day, this was basically a must-win game for us to have a chance at making the playoffs."

Despite the intense atmosphere, Baker controlled much of the possession during the first 25-30 minutes of play, limiting Graceland's ability to create early opportunities. "They had the ball more than us for the first 25-30 minutes of the game. But once we settled into the rhythm of the game, we started to create more opportunities," Courtney said.

Graceland's best chance of the first half came in the 9th minute when Dani Amez's shot hit the crossbar. Baker responded with two shots on goal, but Graceland goalkeeper Miguel Roces was solid in the net, making key saves to keep the game level. Both teams had chances, but the first half ended scoreless.

Coming out of the halftime break, Graceland knew a draw would not be enough to keep their playoff hopes alive. "We knew that we had to go for it. A tie was no good for us. We needed the win," Coach Courtney emphasized. The Yellowjackets responded with a stronger second half, pressing forward and creating more scoring chances.

Baker continued to apply pressure, taking 11 shots in the second half, but Roces stood tall, making five saves to preserve the clean sheet. Coach Courtney praised his goalkeeper's performance, saying, "Miguel Roces bounced back from a rough game at Clarke to make some critical saves in the dying minutes of this one."

Graceland's persistence paid off in the 79th minute when a set-piece opportunity gave them the breakthrough they needed. "The boys responded with a great second-half display of grit and toughness. After letting several quality chances slip away, we were finally able to get the goal we needed on a set play. The delivery from Mario Salinas was pinpoint, and the header from Guillermo Tejada was taken with great technique," Coach Courtney recounted.

Following Tejada's goal, Graceland adjusted their tactics to protect the lead. "From that point on, we changed our tactics to protect the lead, inserting another defender and taking out an attacking player," Courtney explained. Baker threw numbers forward in a desperate attempt to equalize, but Graceland's defense, anchored by Roces, held firm to secure the victory.

With the win, Graceland remains in contention for postseason play. However, the Yellowjackets face a quick turnaround as they prepare to travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to take on Grand View University on Tuesday, October 22. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

"We are very happy with a win against any opponent in this conference," Coach Courtney added. "Grand View will be another big challenge with a short turnaround time, as we travel and play on Tuesday."

Graceland's victory was a testament to their grit and determination, and they will look to carry that momentum forward into their next crucial conference matchup.
