Graceland Men’s Soccer Falls to Grand View 3-2 in a Tough Road Loss

Des Moines, Iowa – Graceland University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Grand View University in a crucial Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) match on Tuesday evening. The Yellowjackets, now 7-5-4 overall and 3-5-2 in conference play, fought hard but were unable to overcome a late goal by Grand View, which dashed Graceland's chances for a comeback.

Despite the loss, Graceland displayed flashes of offensive promise, with Stefano Mazzariol and Guillermo Tejada each finding the back of the net. However, the Yellowjackets were ultimately undone by a pair of goals from Grand View's Pietro Piacenza and a late game-winner from Clement Scaccia.

Head Coach Bryan Courtney expressed his disappointment following the match. "This game will be hard to get over. We altered our tactics somewhat to push for more scoring because a tie was not really going to help us. We knew the risk and paid the price. Now we have to win against Missouri Valley on Saturday to have any chance at the playoffs. It is not an impossible task, but a big challenge for sure."

Graceland took an early lead in the match when Stefano Mazzariol scored an unassisted goal in the 31st minute to put the Yellowjackets up 1-0. Mazzariol's strike came after a period of sustained pressure by Graceland, including a header attempt by Guillermo Tejada that went wide left.

Grand View responded late in the first half with a goal from Piacenza in the 38th minute, assisted by Samuel Londono. The score was tied 1-1 at halftime, with both teams battling for control of the midfield and trading corner kicks throughout the half.

Grand View wasted little time in the second half, as Piacenza netted his second goal of the match in the 53rd minute, heading home a cross from Joshua Grosser to give Grand View a 2-1 lead. Graceland struggled to regain its footing after the early goal but eventually found an equalizer in the 66th minute when Tejada scored off an assist from Mazzariol.

With the score tied at 2-2 and both teams pushing for a decisive goal, Grand View struck again in the 83rd minute. Scaccia converted a pass from Grosser, securing the 3-2 victory for the Vikings and sending Graceland home empty-handed.

Key Statistics

  • Graceland recorded 10 total shots, with 5 of them on goal, while Grand View registered 13 shots, 7 of which were on target.
  • Goalkeeper Miguel Roces made 4 saves in the match but was unable to stop the key chances created by Grand View's attack.
  • Graceland had multiple opportunities to score from set pieces, including several corner kicks by Mario Salinas and a header attempt by Tejada in the 79th minute that was saved by Grand View goalkeeper Scott Pengelly.

The match also saw several yellow cards issued, with Graceland's Kendall Guzman Soto and Joseph Boyce both receiving cautions, while Grand View had four players cautioned, including Piacenza and Scaccia.

Graceland now faces a must-win situation as it heads into its final regular-season match. The Yellowjackets will host the Missouri Valley Vikings this Saturday at 7pm in Lamoni, Iowa. A win would be critical in keeping Graceland's postseason hopes alive as they push for a spot in the HAAC playoffs.
