Yellowjackets outlast Metropolitan in thrilling 3-1 win
LAMONI, IA – Graceland men's soccer delivered one of its most electric performances of the season Tuesday night, outlasting Metropolitan Community College in a 3-1 victory that featured end-to-end action and defensive heroics.
Both sides kept the pressure high, with Graceland recording nine shots on goal and Metropolitan eleven, forcing both keepers into action throughout the night.
Freshman goalkeeper Landon Wickham anchored the Yellowjackets for the full 90 minutes, stepping up with several critical saves to keep the match level in key moments.
The breakthrough came late in the first half, as Bahaa Merbeh—set up by Simon Esh—slipped through the Wolves' backline to give Graceland a 1-0 lead. But Metropolitan responded in dramatic fashion, equalizing with just 18 seconds left before halftime to send both teams into the break tied 1-1.
The second half turned up the intensity.
Defender Malachi Parks made a sensational sliding clearance off the line after Wickham was briefly out of position, followed moments later by a highlight-reel, one-handed save from Wickham in a chaotic scramble in the box. The defensive stand continued as Simon Esh blocked a point-blank shot to deny a would-be go-ahead goal.
Graceland finally broke the deadlock with 23 minutes to play, as Brady Waters slotted home to restore the lead, 2-1. The Yellowjackets stayed aggressive, and with just 2:36 left on the clock, Victor Chirinos iced the match with a brilliant chip from distance, catching the keeper off his line to make it 3-1.
The match grew chippy late, with Metropolitan issued four yellow cards to Graceland's one in a physical, fast-paced final stretch.
The Yellowjackets return to action this Sunday, October 26, at the Heart of America JV Conference Tournament, hosted at the North Park Soccer Complex in Baldwin City, Kansas. Match time is still to be determined.
