Graceland Falls in Straight Sets at William Penn
OSKALOOSA, Iowa — The Graceland University men's volleyball team dropped a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup in straight sets to William Penn on Friday night, falling 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 at the Penn Activity Center. The Yellowjackets move to 2-22 overall and 1-13 in conference play, while the Statesmen improve to 16-5 overall and 12-4 in the HAAC.
Graceland generated 28 kills on a .125 attack percentage, struggling to find offensive rhythm against a disciplined William Penn block and transition defense. The Yellowjackets recorded 27 assists and 29 digs, but were limited to just one service ace while committing 16 service errors, disrupting momentum throughout the match.
Elijah Kline and Hawk Richard each led the attack with seven kills, combining for 15 points, while Kalanikapu Aona posted a team-best .444 hitting percentage on limited swings. Setter distribution was shared, with Nairod Fonseca totaling 14 assists and Luis Garcia adding 12, helping Graceland generate balanced offensive looks despite efficiency challenges.
At the net, the Yellowjackets recorded 12 total team blocks, highlighted by Jerze Simonson's six block assists, but William Penn countered with a more efficient offensive system, hitting .256 as a team and totaling 36 kills. The Statesmen were led by Marton Sebestyen's 10 kills and a match-high offensive tempo directed by Brady Zell.
Graceland showed early competitiveness in each set, including multiple lead exchanges in the opening frame, but William Penn used sustained serving runs and low error rates to separate late in sets.
"We had moments where our serve-receive and blocking schemes were effective, but we didn't sustain it point-to-point," said head coach Eric Majors. "At this level, minimizing service errors and executing in transition are critical, and that's where we need to improve."
Graceland has a quick turnaround, hosting conference foe Grand View University on Saturday, March 28, at 1 p.m. in the Morden Center.
