Yellowjackets Fall to Morningside on Senior Night, Conclude 2026 Season
LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University men's volleyball team closed out its 2026 campaign Tuesday night, falling to Morningside in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-14) at the Morden Center on Senior Night. Graceland finishes the season 2-28 overall (1-18 conference), while Morningside improves to 22-10 overall (10-9 conference).
In the opening set, the Yellowjackets remained within striking distance early, utilizing outside tempo and pin distribution to generate side-out opportunities. Elijah Kline produced multiple terminal swings, finishing with eight kills on a .286 hitting percentage, while Hawk Richard added five kills on a .250 clip. However, Morningside established separation through efficient offensive sequencing, hitting .315 as a team and converting in-system opportunities into points.
Graceland posted a .108 team attack percentage, totaling 27 kills against 17 errors on 93 attempts, as serve-receive pressure and block timing disrupted offensive flow. The Mustangs recorded 10 total blocks and 43 digs, limiting extended rallies and forcing out-of-system swings from the Yellowjackets.
In Set 2, Graceland showed improved rhythm in transition, with Nairod Fonseca facilitating the offense and contributing 11 assists, while Luis Garcia added 12 assists in a shared setter system. The Yellowjackets generated balanced point distribution but were unable to close scoring gaps, as Morningside capitalized on high-efficiency swings from Natan Alves, who led all players with 15 kills on a .542 hitting percentage.
The third set saw Morningside extend runs through serve pressure and blocking discipline, holding Graceland to a .115 hitting percentage in the frame. Defensively, Benjamin Gorton-Hülgerth contributed eight digs, while multiple front-row combinations produced 10 total team blocks, but the Yellowjackets were unable to sustain offensive efficiency against a well-structured defensive scheme.
"We competed in phases and showed growth in our offensive structure, particularly in how we distributed the ball and created attacking lanes," said head coach Eric Majors. "Our focus moving forward will be on improving serve-receive efficiency and reducing unforced errors to increase our side-out percentage."
Tuesday's match marked Senior Night for the Yellowjackets, recognizing the program's senior class for their contributions and commitment. With the result, Graceland concludes its season and will transition into offseason development, focusing on recruiting, system refinement and positional depth.
Graceland will not return to competition until the 2027 season, turning its attention to offseason preparation and program development. For more information on Graceland men's volleyball and all Yellowjacket athletics, visit GUjackets.com.
