Graceland Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Culver-Stockton
CANTON, Mo. — The Graceland University women's basketball team (1-14, 0-7 Heart of America Athletic Conference) suffered a 106-64 defeat on the road Saturday afternoon against Culver-Stockton College (9-6, 3-4 Heart) at Charles Field House in Canton, Missouri. The loss marks the Yellowjackets' 11th consecutive setback.
Culver-Stockton opened the game on a 10-0 run and never trailed, outscoring Graceland in every quarter and converting on 55.1 percent of its field goals and 50.0 percent from three-point range. The Wildcats connected on 15 three-pointers and tallied 28 assists on 38 made field goals.
Graceland shot 40.0 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from behind the arc. Sariah Bradley led the Yellowjackets with 11 points off the bench, while Maxine Ampofo chipped in 10 points and four rebounds. Sophia Rodriguez contributed nine points and a team-high five assists.
Turnovers again proved costly for the Yellowjackets, as they committed 17, leading to 29 points for the Wildcats. Graceland also allowed 18 fast-break points and was outrebounded 42-28.
"We are still in the process of learning how to play for a full 40 minutes at this level," said head coach Willie Scott. "Our effort was there in stretches, but defensively we didn't execute well enough to slow their rhythm. We'll keep working and growing."
Culver-Stockton's Avery Oetting led all scorers with 40 points, including 9-of-12 from beyond the arc.
Graceland will look to rebound in its next outing when it travels to Clarke University (IA) on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CST at the Kehl Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
