Grand View Pulls Away Early, Defeats Graceland 75-51 in Heart Clash
LAMONI, Iowa — Grand View, the Heart of America Athletic Conference leader, used a dominant first half and a decisive edge on the glass to defeat Graceland 75-51 on Wednesday evening at the Morden Center. The Vikings improved to 21-7 overall and 18-2 in conference play, while the Yellowjackets fell to 4-23 overall and 3-16 in the Heart.
Grand View established control in the opening quarter, holding Graceland to 6 points on 3-of-13 shooting. The Vikings shot 47.1% in the first period and forced early half-court possessions that limited Graceland's transition opportunities. A 19-6 first-quarter margin set the tone, and Grand View extended the lead to 41-19 at halftime behind efficient perimeter spacing and second-chance production.
Grand View finished the night shooting 41.8% from the field (28-of-67) and 32.1% from 3-point range (9-of-28), while outrebounding Graceland 47-23. The Vikings also converted 18 second-chance points and scored 32 points in the paint.
Senior forward Ellie Knock led Grand View with 17 points and 10 rebounds, recording a double-double while anchoring the interior. Senior guard Claire Galbraith added 15 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, and senior guard Anna Gossling contributed 12 points, connecting on four 3-pointers. Forward Taryn Ottemann provided 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, giving the Vikings a +24 rebound margin.
Graceland shot 29.2% from the field (19-of-65) and 26.3% from 3-point range (5-of-19). The Yellowjackets committed 11 turnovers and were limited to 4 second-chance points. Despite the deficit, Graceland generated 14 points off turnovers and received 20 bench points.
Junior guard Aniah Smith paced the Yellowjackets with 14 points, including 3-of-9 from long range. Senior guard Ianara Morbidoni added 10 points, while senior guard Brooklyn Davis finished with 10 points. Forward Maxine Ampofo pulled down eight rebounds to lead Graceland on the glass.
Grand View's largest lead reached 29 points midway through the fourth quarter. The Vikings maintained control by limiting dribble penetration and forcing contested jump shots late in the shot clock.
"We knew coming in that Grand View sets the standard in this conference," Graceland head coach Willie Scott said. "They rebound at a high level and execute in the half court. For us, it comes down to defensive rotations, finishing possessions and converting quality looks. We have to tighten our defensive rebounding and sustain offensive efficiency for four quarters."
Grand View, which leads the Heart standings, has now won 18 conference games and remains in position for the top seed entering postseason play. Graceland continues conference competition seeking to build momentum late in the regular season.
The Yellowjackets return to action Saturday, Feb. 21, hosting Baker (Kan.) at 2 p.m. CST at the Morden Center in Lamoni, Iowa. The contest will serve as Senior Day as Graceland closes out its home schedule.
