Graceland Women’s Golf Team Secures Second Place at Fall Invite

Lamoni, Iowa – The Graceland University women's golf team posted a strong showing in their latest outing, finishing second in the two-team field at the Fall Invitational, held on Tuesday. Competing against Peru State, the Yellowjackets made strides as they recorded their second team score of the season. The event saw participation from only 15 golfers, with players from North Central Missouri and Metropolitan Community College also competing as individuals.

Graceland was led by an impressive individual performance from Cydney Stables, who finished as the runner-up with consistent play across both rounds. Stables' accuracy and strategic approach to each hole allowed her to contend at the top, further establishing herself as a leading scorer for the Yellowjackets.

Head Coach Kevin Brunner expressed satisfaction with the team's overall performance and improvement, especially with the team finishing the tournament as a unit for only the second time this season. "I'm very pleased with our team's performance. Cydney Stables had an excellent tournament, finishing as the individual runner-up," Brunner stated. "It was encouraging to post a team score again, and we're looking forward to building on this momentum. With only 15 players in the entire tournament, it's clear we're improving and getting more comfortable competing."

Coach Brunner noted that Peru State was the only other team in the event to post a team score, underscoring the unique dynamics of the tournament field. Individual competitors from North Central Missouri and Metropolitan Community College added to the competitive environment, providing an opportunity for Graceland's players to gain valuable experience.

Tournament Highlights and Performance Recap

Graceland's ability to field a complete team for scoring purposes marks another step in their 2024 fall season progress. Stables led the way with steady scores across her rounds, while her teammates contributed critical points to secure the Yellowjackets' runner-up position. The Yellowjackets navigated challenging course conditions and displayed improved teamwork, consistency, and course management skills—key aspects that Coach Brunner hopes will continue to develop through the season.

The smaller tournament field offered Graceland's players the chance to work on precision and course strategy without the pressure of a large-scale event, helping them build confidence for the remainder of the season. Coach Brunner is optimistic that this experience will provide a foundation for continued growth, aiming to refine skills and foster a strong team dynamic moving forward.

Looking Ahead

The Yellowjackets' next event is the annual GU Homecoming Fundraising Tournament, an exhibition match that brings together alumni and current players to celebrate the university's golf legacy. This unique tournament, part of the 2024 fall campaign, serves as both a competitive opportunity, a link to the history of Graceland alum and a fundraiser for the Graceland golf program.
