Graceland Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 6 Missouri Valley in Heart Match
LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 6 Missouri Valley College on Saturday in a Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) contest at the Rasmussen Sports Complex. With the result, Graceland moved to 4-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the Heart, while Missouri Valley improved to 6-0-3 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play.
First-Half Goals Prove Decisive
The Vikings opened scoring in the 16th minute as Ashley Arribas finished a chance created by Madi Hudson. Less than 10 minutes later, Arribas struck again, converting off an assist from Daijah White to extend the lead to 2-0.
Graceland regrouped and tightened its shape, preventing further first-half damage against one of the NAIA's top-ranked sides.
Defensive Resilience and Goalkeeping
The Yellowjackets relied on strong goalkeeping throughout. Alexis Porter started and made four saves in 27 minutes, before Alexia Johnson entered to finish the match with three saves in 63 minutes. Together, the pair combined for seven stops, keeping Missouri Valley scoreless in the second half.
Defenders Owen Dye, Chloe Montera, Mackenzie Ralston and Addison Fletcher held steady across the back line, clearing service and contesting Missouri Valley's pace in wide areas.
In attack, Mariam El Mir Tartou and Tessa Cook generated four of Graceland's five total shots, with Nuria Garcia adding the other. Though chances were limited, Graceland pushed forward through midfield transition.
Coach's Perspective
Head coach Randall Porter emphasized the value of the test against a nationally ranked opponent.
"Missouri Valley is ranked No. 6 in the country for a reason," Porter said. "They set the standard in our conference with their execution and pace. I was encouraged by how our players adjusted defensively and created opportunities through the midfield. The challenge now is turning those chances into consistent looks in the attacking third. This group is learning and growing every time we step on the field."
By the Numbers
Missouri Valley outshot Graceland 17-5 and held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The Vikings also earned a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Arribas recorded both goals on four total shots, while Hudson and White each collected assists.
Goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujal made two saves for Missouri Valley to preserve the shutout.
Graceland was called for seven fouls, while Missouri Valley committed five. One yellow card was issued to the Yellowjackets in the 76th minute.
Conference Context
Facing a top-10 program underscored the level of competition in the Heart of America. The match served as an early benchmark for Graceland, which entered the contest unbeaten in four of its last five outings.
With a balance of returning starters and underclassmen, the Yellowjackets continue to stress possession play, defensive communication and improved efficiency in the final third.
Looking Ahead: Homecoming
The Yellowjackets now prepare for a key Homecoming matchup. Graceland will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. CDT, hosting Missouri Baptist University at the Rasmussen Sports Complex in Lamoni, Iowa.
The contest will give Graceland an opportunity to perform in front of a homecoming crowd and seek a nonconference result against a strong Midwest opponent.
