Graceland Records Multiple Top-Three Finishes at Dick Young Classic
GRINNELL, Iowa — The Graceland University women's outdoor track and field team recorded multiple top-three finishes at the Dick Young Classic on April 11, highlighted by event victories in the pole vault, discus, hammer throw and 10,000 meters. Team scoring results were not fully listed in the meet summary, but Graceland accumulated points across distance and field events.
Alissa Caruso led Graceland with a first-place finish in the 10,000 meters, posting a time of 44:14.23 to secure 10 team points. The performance marked the top distance result for the Yellowjackets on the day.
In field events, Ambar Fulgencio placed first in the pole vault, clearing 3.05 meters (10-0) to add another 10 points. Fulgencio also contributed on the track, finishing seventh in the 400 meters (1:05.86).
Amanda Newton recorded a first-place finish in the discus, reaching 39.63 meters (130-0). Newton also placed third in the hammer throw (46.16 meters), contributing additional points in throws competition.
Kady Vandemark delivered multiple top-three finishes, placing second in the discus (38.71 meters) and first in the hammer throw (51.87 meters). Vandemark also added a third-place finish in the shot put (12.44 meters), giving Graceland points in three throwing events.
Malori Leonard placed second in the javelin (30.42 meters) and added a seventh-place finish in the discus (34.36 meters). In the same event, Grace Testerman secured third place in the javelin with a mark of 24.59 meters, contributing six team points.
Graceland also produced depth in the throwing events, with Hannah Kling finishing fifth in the shot put (11.49 meters) and Newton adding a top-three hammer finish.
On the track, Ambar Fulgencio accounted for Graceland's only scoring finish, placing seventh in the 400 meters for two points.
Head coach Tom Shore emphasized the team's production in field events and distance races.
"We generated points in multiple throwing events and distance races, which was a priority entering the meet," Shore said. "Our focus remains on consistent marks and improving event-specific execution as we move forward in the outdoor season."
Graceland returns to competition April 18 at the Mount Mercy DeBacker Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
