Graceland Women’s Wrestling Concludes Road Dual at William Penn
OSKALOOSA, Iowa — Graceland University women's wrestling fell in a road dual to William Penn University on Jan. 13 at the Penn Activity Center, 40-5. The Yellowjackets dropped the matchup by forfeit in eight contested weight classes, with first-year wrestler Sierra Davenport earning Graceland's lone victory.
The dual opened at 103 pounds, where Olivia Atkins of William Penn was awarded a forfeit, giving the Statesmen a 5-0 lead. Teya Garner extended the lead at 110 with another forfeit, pushing the deficit to 10-0.
No bout was wrestled at 117 pounds. Graceland then struck at 124 pounds, where Sierra Davenport received a forfeit, putting the Yellowjackets on the board at 10-5. The 124-pounder, a key piece of the Yellowjackets' freshman class, improved her record to 2-1 in dual action.
"We continue to focus on building depth and consistency," said Head Men's Coach Evan Hansen, who also assists with the women's program. "Sierra continues to step up and embrace the moment. We're proud of her focus and execution."
William Penn responded by securing forfeits in each of the remaining weight classes. Bronwyn Brenneman (131), Ana Vilar (138), Isabelle Hawley (145), Joey Ives (160), Ava Mirth (180), and Daisy Cabriales (207) each picked up six points apiece, closing out the dual with a 40-5 result in favor of the Statesmen.
Graceland's lineup featured several open weights, a reflection of the team's developing roster and a renewed emphasis on recruitment and foundational growth.
"Our athletes are learning what it means to compete in the NAIA at a high level," Hansen added. "This program is young, but the grit is there. The challenge is building week to week and being ready for those marquee events."
The Yellowjackets (0-2) will next take the mat in one of the premier events of the season: the William Penn Open, hosted once again at the Penn Activity Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Action begins Sunday, Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. CST, featuring top-tier programs from across the collegiate landscape.
