Graceland Women's Cross Country Gains Momentum at Indian Hills Invite

OTTUMWA, Iowa – The Graceland University women's cross country team continued its 2025 campaign Saturday morning at the Indian Hills Invitational, toeing the line in a competitive 5K field comprised of NAIA and NJCAA programs. Racing at the Ottumwa Airport Complex, the Yellowjackets finished 7th overall in the team standings with a total score of 161 points.

Facing established programs such as St. Ambrose University and Indian Hills Community College, Graceland's runners maintained focus and delivered consistent results throughout the rolling, open course layout.

Caruso Leads Yellowjackets in Midpack Push

Alissa Caruso paced the Yellowjackets, finishing 23rd overall with a time of 20:53.48. The junior stayed composed through the opening mile and closed strong, picking off several competitors in the final stretch to lead Graceland's top five.

Close behind was Sierra Davenport, who placed 28th in 21:28.77, marking one of her strongest performances of the season. Caitlin Grover crossed in 22:33.83 to take 33rd, followed by Thayado Echavarria (44th, 24:10.04) and Cameron Sharp (47th, 25:17.67), who rounded out the scoring positions.

"We continue to see improvement in our 1-to-5 time spread, which is key for postseason competition," said head coach Tom Shore. "Our women are learning to race as a unit, and today was a good example of that in action."

Competitive Field Sets High Bar

St. Ambrose University won the team title with 27 points, placing five runners in the top 12, including overall winner Kaitlyn Knoche, who clocked a meet-best 18:30.39. Indian Hills CC and Des Moines Area CC followed in second and third, respectively, while Southeastern CC, North Iowa Area CC, and Faith Baptist Bible College also finished ahead of Graceland.

Despite placing seventh, the Yellowjackets demonstrated strategic pacing and pack running through the first two miles before spreading slightly over the final kilometer. Their ability to hold off several individual competitors in the final stages reflects training focused on race awareness and finishing strength.

Season Outlook and Upcoming Race

While cross country does not operate on a traditional win-loss record, the Yellowjackets continue to build toward their postseason goals through regular-season meets that emphasize team development, endurance progression, and tactical race experience.

"This group has shown growth each week," Shore added. "We're going to focus on staying healthy and fine-tuning our race strategies as we enter the final stretch of the season."

The Yellowjackets will return to action next weekend at the Blazing Tiger NAIA Classic, hosted by Doane University and the College of Saint Mary. The meet will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Mahoney State Park in Ashland, Nebraska, with the women's race set to begin at 10:00 a.m. CDT.
