Mount Mercy Sweeps Graceland in Heart Matchup
LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Mount Mercy on Friday evening inside the Morden Center, dropping a Heart of America Athletic Conference contest, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20. With the result, the Yellowjackets move to 0-11 overall (0-2 Heart), while Mount Mercy improves to 6-0 overall (2-0 Heart). Official statistics are available via the match box score .
Mount Mercy posted a .108 team hitting percentage (32 kills, 22 errors, 93 attempts), while Graceland recorded 20 kills on 79 swings and finished with a -.025 attacking percentage. The Mustangs held advantages in assists (30-18), digs (34-31) and service aces (4-0), while Graceland totaled seven block solos and nine block assists at the net.
In the opening set, Graceland battled to a 14-14 tie before Mount Mercy closed on an 11-6 scoring run to secure the 25-20 decision. The Yellowjackets received kills from Jackson House, Elijah Kline and Kalanikapu Aona during the mid-set stretch, but Mount Mercy converted efficiently in transition offense.
The second set featured early separation by the Mustangs, who opened on a 6-2 run and limited Graceland to six kills with a -.120 hitting percentage in the frame. Mount Mercy maintained side-out efficiency and extended the margin late to take the 25-17 win.
Graceland showed improved defensive structure in the third set, tying the score at 10-10 before Mount Mercy responded with a 6-1 run that proved decisive. House led the Yellowjackets with eight kills on 21 attempts, while Aona hit .500 with three kills and two block assists. Nairod Fonseca distributed 14 assists and nine digs, anchoring serve-receive and offensive tempo.
Graceland recorded 16 total block touches but was limited by 22 attack errors and 11 service errors, which disrupted rhythm in key stretches.
Graceland returns to conference play Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. CST against Clarke (Iowa) inside the Morden Center in Lamoni, Iowa.
