Grand View Defeats Graceland in Straight Sets Saturday Afternoon

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Graceland University men's volleyball team fell in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3-0 decision to Grand View (25-20, 25-14, 25-23) at Des Moines, Iowa. The Yellowjackets move to 1-15 overall and 0-6 in conference play, while the Vikings improve to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the Heart.

Graceland totaled 31 kills on 89 total attacks for a .124 hitting percentage, adding 29 assists, two service aces and eight total team blocks. Grand View countered with 42 kills on a .264 clip and 41 assists, controlling tempo through system offense and transition swings.

Elijah Kline led the Yellowjackets with 11 kills on 24 swings, posting a team-best .417 attack percentage. Andrew Cziep added nine kills and two block assists, finishing with 10 points. Jerze Simonson contributed four kills and three total blocks, while setter Nairod Fonseca directed the offense with 27 assists and four digs.

In the opening set, Graceland generated early sideout efficiency behind kills from Kline and Cziep to take a 2-1 edge. However, Grand View responded with a 5-0 run sparked by consecutive service aces and terminated balls from the left pin. The Yellowjackets trimmed the margin to 16-21 after a block touch and a service ace by Nam Taluong, but the Vikings closed the frame 25-20.

The second set saw Grand View capitalize on serve-receive pressure and transition offense. Graceland recorded six kills but committed six attack errors, resulting in a .000 set percentage. Despite a mid-set block by Cziep and Simonson and multiple controlled digs in base defense, the Yellowjackets were unable to sustain scoring runs, falling 25-14.

Graceland delivered its strongest push in the third set, producing 14 kills on 33 attempts and hitting .152 in the frame. The Yellowjackets built a 13-9 advantage behind balanced distribution and improved first-ball contact. Kline and Cziep combined for key terminal swings, and a double block from Cziep and Kalanikapu Aona slowed the Viking right side.

The set remained within a one-point margin late, with Graceland tying the score at 19-19 and again at 22-22 following a controlled block and transition kill. A late exchange featured consecutive sideouts before Grand View secured match point at 24-23 and finished the contest 25-23 on a block.

Grand View was led by Jake Winters with 12 kills and Andre Lucas Alves Leandro with 11 kills. Setter Guilherme Domdei Goedert recorded 32 assists as the Vikings distributed across all attacking lanes.

Head coach Eric Majors emphasized the importance of execution in extended rallies.

"We generated quality swings in-system and improved our block positioning in the third set," Majors said. "Our serve-receive platform needs to remain consistent to establish tempo offense. When we passed at a high level, we were able to distribute effectively and create one-on-one situations. We will continue to focus on minimizing unforced errors and sustaining defensive pressure."

Defensively, Graceland recorded 19 digs and two solo blocks, competing at the net with eight total block assists. However, eight service errors and 20 attack errors limited momentum opportunities.

Graceland was originally scheduled to host William Penn on Friday night in Lamoni. Due to the Graceland men's basketball team hosting the conference tournament semifinals, the match against William Penn has been postponed and will be rescheduled to a later date and time.

The Yellowjackets will next return to action on the road at Missouri Baptist on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in St. Louis, Missouri, at the MBU Fieldhouse.
