Women's Soccer Draws 1-1 Against No. 19 MidAmerica Nazarene on Senior Day
LAMONI, Iowa — On a meaningful Senior Day at the Rasmussen Sports Complex, Graceland University battled to a 1-1 draw against No. 19 MidAmerica Nazarene University, a nationally ranked opponent and one of the Heart of America Athletic Conference's top programs. With the result, the Yellowjackets move to 6-7-4 overall and 3-6-3 in Heart play, while the Pioneers shift to 10-2-2 overall and 8-1-2 in the conference, maintaining third place in the HAAC standings with 26 points.
MidAmerica Nazarene struck immediately, scoring in the first minute when Tindra Jarl (Fr., Gothenburg, Sweden) finished off a quick combination assisted by Luna Etienne (So., London, England). The early goal tested Graceland's focus and composure, but the Yellowjackets responded with poise.
In the 25th minute, Chloe Montera (So., Brea, Calif.) capitalized on a second-chance ball inside the box, slotting it past the keeper to level the match at 1-1. It marked Montera's third goal of the season and highlighted an attacking performance where she led all players with six shots, including four on target.
Defensively, goalkeeper Maggie Peterson (So., Kansas City, Mo.) turned in one of her strongest outings of the season, registering 10 saves on 11 shots on goal. Her second-half performance featured key stops, including a diving save in the 76th minute and a leaping effort on a close-range shot five minutes later to preserve the result.
The Yellowjackets fired 11 total shots with eight on goal, while the Pioneers recorded 13 total attempts, 11 on frame, and a slight edge in corner kicks (7-4). The match was physical but clean, with each team committing five fouls.
Freshman Sierra Flores (Whittier, Calif.), junior Mariam El Mir Tartouri (Barcelona, Spain), and sophomore Mackenzie Ralston (Gardner, Kan.) were all active in the midfield and final third, contributing shots and maintaining possession through tight windows. Ralston and El Mir Tartouri combined for three shots on goal.
Graceland head coach Randall Porter praised his veterans after the match: "I first want to thank the seniors for their dedication and leadership. They have been great role models for the younger players, and without them we wouldn't be making the progress we have made. This group has set a tone for what it means to compete at a high level, and their impact will carry forward beyond this season. I'm proud of how we handled today's challenge and the grit we showed against a top-tier team.""
MidAmerica Nazarene, currently pushing toward a top-two seed in the conference tournament, maintained pressure throughout the second half but was repeatedly denied by Peterson and the Graceland back line, anchored by Kramer, Diaz, and sophomore Nuria Garcia (Alicante, Spain).
Substitutes Wissal Rafik (Jr., Agadir, Morocco), Tessa Cook (Fr., Jordan, Minn.), Caitlin Lageman (So., Blue Springs, Mo.), and Grace Eltiste (So., Bellevue, Neb.) gave quality minutes off the bench as Graceland rotated fresh legs late in the match to combat MidAm's attacking depth.
Graceland now turns its attention to the final match of the regular season. The Yellowjackets will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to face Grand View University on Tuesday, October 28 at 5:00 p.m. CDT. The match will take place at Cownie Soccer Complex, with potential seeding implications in the HAAC postseason tournament still in play.
