Graceland Women’s Soccer Draws 2-2 with Bethel (IN) in Road Opener

Mishawaka, Ind. – The Graceland University women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against Bethel (IN) on Thursday evening in Mishawaka. The Yellowjackets (0-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference) earned the road result with a second-half equalizer from Sierra Flores, while the Pilots (0-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 Crossroads League) settled for their second straight tie to open the season.

Bethel struck first in the 10th minute when Aubrey Vervynckt converted a pass from Leena Thomas to give the Pilots a 1-0 advantage. Graceland responded quickly, leveling the score in the 18th minute. Tessa Cook finished a cross in the box off a combination from Sierra Flores and Caitlin Lageman, bringing the match to 1-1. Just three minutes later, Bethel regained the lead. Thomas found the back of the net in the 20th minute off a setup from Leila Mojtahedi, sending the Pilots into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.

The second half belonged largely to the Yellowjackets. Graceland pressed higher up the pitch, creating more attacking sequences and limiting Bethel's quality chances. The persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Flores equalized, this time finishing a setup from Nuria Garcia. The goal tied the match at 2-2, where it remained until the final whistle.

Graceland had several other opportunities to grab the lead late, including shots from Chloe Montera and Garcia, but Bethel goalkeeper Meghan Kiebel recorded three second-half saves to preserve the draw. The Yellowjackets also earned three corner kicks, compared to Bethel's five, as both sides searched for decisive chances in the closing minutes.

Defensively, goalkeeper Alexis Porter anchored the Jackets, recording eight saves in the full 90 minutes. Porter's strong performance in net helped deny multiple quality shots, including stops on Vervynckt and Thomas in the second half. Graceland defenders Mackenzie Ralston, Veronica Baehr, and Keylannah Gutierrez contributed to a stronger back line performance after halftime, helping to neutralize Bethel's forwards.

The contest was physical, with Bethel committing 10 fouls and Graceland four. Two Yellowjackets picked up cautions late in the second half — Flores in the 81st minute and Garcia in the 87th minute — as the match grew more heated with the score level.

Following the match, Coach Porter praised his team's resilience against a tough opponent: "I am proud of the way we responded tonight. To go down early on the road and still fight back shows the mentality we are building," said Head Coach Randall Porter from Mishawaka. "We had young players step into critical moments, and they delivered. Our defensive organization improved as the match went on, and offensively, we created chances in the final third. These are the types of matches that prepare us for conference play."
